Antigua Cruise Boom Lifts Tourism to New December Highs
Antigua is enjoying a record surge in cruise arrivals this December. And the twin-island nation continues to welcome ships at an impressive pace. Cruise traffic is climbing fast, and the local economy is feeling the benefits. Moreover, tourism officials say the strong momentum will continue.
Antigua Cruise Port in St John’s Harbour is now a daily hub of activity. Three to four ships arrive on most days. As a result, thousands of visitors stream through the harbour. On Monday, ships like Mein Schiff 2 and Azamara Quest brought large groups of passengers. These arrivals also highlighted the wide mix of cruise lines visiting the islands.
Earlier in the week, on Sunday, the port welcomed Explora I, Emerald Azzura, and Mein Schiff 2. These ships added even more visitors. They also created new chances for locals to engage with tourists. And they pushed Antigua further into the spotlight as a top regional port.
December 2025 has become one of the busiest months in recent memory. On December 6, Antigua hosted Azamara Onwards, Marella Discovery 2, and Norwegian Gem. These visits fueled significant spending onshore. Additionally, December 5 delivered an even stronger lineup, with Norwegian Getaway and Celebrity Ascent joining several other ships. That day featured multiple large vessels, which boosted earnings for local vendors and tour operators.
Tourism leaders see the growth as a sign of even bigger things ahead. Prime Minister Gaston Browne aims to position the nation as a world-class destination. He envisions up to 10 million annual visitors in the long term. Although Antigua attracts 350,000 to 400,000 overnight guests each year, officials believe the potential is far greater. And the strong cruise season supports this vision.
Local businesses are already benefiting from the boom. Shops, restaurants, and excursion operators report strong demand. Furthermore, communities are gaining more opportunities to interact with visitors. Many artisans and guides now reach wider markets. And these exchanges strengthen cultural ties.
As cruise arrivals rise, the government continues to invest in port upgrades. Better facilities, smoother transport, and improved services are on the way. These upgrades will support future growth. And they will help Antigua stay competitive across the Caribbean.
Overall, December’s cruise surge marks a powerful milestone. And Antigua’s tourism sector looks set for an even brighter future.
