Cheaper Prices Expected Soon as Govt Cuts Food Tariffs

Cheaper

Cheaper supermarket prices should reach households within weeks. Moreover, Prime Minister Gaston Browne delivered this message as he unveiled major cost-of-living measures during the 2026 budget presentation. He said the government intends to ease pressure on every family as global prices stabilize.

Browne announced that the government will remove the 42 percent Common External Tariff on many imported food items. These items include beans, butter, vegetables, fruits, cereals, oils, canned meats, fish and baby food. Additionally, he said the full savings must reach consumers. He warned supermarkets not to keep the benefits for themselves.

He told Parliament that the tax removal is simple. Goods that once carried a 42 percent charge will now enter duty-free. Furthermore, he encouraged the public to report any business that refuses to lower its prices. He stressed that the goal is direct relief for households.

The Prime Minister said the tariff change will work alongside several ongoing subsidies. These supports include fuel, LPG, electricity and essential foods. He added that the government will double its food voucher programme in 2026. Nearly 7,000 pensioners and more than 1,600 vulnerable households will continue receiving direct support.

Inflation has also eased. Browne noted that average inflation fell to 1.4 percent between January and August 2025. Prices even declined by 1 percent in September. Moreover, he credited better global supply chains, lower commodity prices and government action for the improvement.

The government will also suspend duties on selected non-CARICOM foods. In addition, it will deepen its partnership with Guyana to import more affordable staples. The ABST zero-rating on essential goods will remain in place. Browne said these steps ensure a broad safety net.

He emphasized that no household should feel left behind. He said national development must benefit every family. He also said the government remains committed to protecting the country’s people.

Further details on the cost-of-living plan will emerge during next week’s budget debate. Lawmakers are expected to examine timelines, savings and enforcement. However, Browne maintained that the measures mark a firm push to reduce daily expenses and support national stability.
