Antigua Posts Record Surplus in Ambitious 2026 Budget
Antigua delivered a bold fiscal message with its new 2026 budget. Moreover, Prime Minister Gaston Browne said the country posted one of its strongest results in modern times. He highlighted a primary surplus of $254.9 million. He also noted an overall surplus of $116.3 million.
Furthermore, Browne stressed that these results show a major shift from the deep deficits his government faced 11 years ago. He credited firm fiscal discipline. He also praised steady economic expansion and stronger revenue flows across major sectors.
In addition, he told lawmakers that the strong primary surplus shows the nation now pays all expenses and interest costs with money left over. He said Antigua and Barbuda once borrowed heavily to function. However, the country now produces consistent surpluses that support national priorities.
According to the Ministry of Finance, the debt-to-GDP ratio stands at 61.4%. This marks a clear drop from what Browne described as an effective 120% level when his administration took office. Consequently, he argued that the healthier balance sheet gives the country room to invest more in its people.
Moreover, he said the improved fiscal position will help expand public projects. It will also reinforce social programmes and protect vulnerable families. Officials added that stronger tax compliance and post-pandemic recovery trends boosted revenues.
Tourism continues its strong rebound. Construction activity also keeps rising. Import volumes have increased as well. Therefore, Browne said the economic outlook remains positive. He added that these trends will support new growth opportunities through 2026.
The 2026 budget carries the theme “People-Centered Growth and Development.” It sets out major spending plans for education, healthcare, housing, and infrastructure. Browne said these areas remain central to national progress. Additionally, he insisted that new investments are possible only because of improved fiscal management.
As a result, the government plans to move quickly on several priority projects. These include school upgrades, expanded medical services, and new housing options for low- and middle-income families. The plan also outlines infrastructure improvements designed to support long-term economic stability.
Parliament will begin debate on the budget next week. Lawmakers are expected to review spending plans closely. Yet Browne remains confident. He said the nation now stands on firmer ground and is ready for sustained growth.
