Sir Ronald Warns Over Limits on US Migration Pressure
Sir Ronald Sanders says Antigua and Barbuda cannot accept large numbers of third-country nationals from the United States. Meanwhile, he stressed that the country already set clear limits on what it can handle.
Speaking on the issue, Sanders explained that Antigua and Barbuda made a limited offer to the US. He described it as a gesture of goodwill and friendship.
However, he said the country cannot go beyond its capacity. “We will play our part,” he stated. “But we can do no more than that.”
In addition, Sanders said discussions between both governments are still ongoing. Even so, he emphasized that national limits remain firm.
According to him, the concern is not only numbers. Instead, he pointed to long-term social and economic pressures.
For example, he questioned how large groups would be housed and supported. He also asked how they would integrate into local communities.
Furthermore, he raised concerns about language barriers. Some individuals may not speak English, which could create communication challenges.
At the same time, Sanders questioned how qualifications would be assessed. He said not all skills may transfer easily into the local job market.
“What would happen with them when they come to Antigua?” he asked. He also stressed the need for realistic planning and resources.
Meanwhile, he warned that excessive intake could strain public services. These include housing, healthcare, and social support systems.
In addition, he said population changes must be carefully considered. He cautioned that rapid shifts could create public concern.
Sanders noted that the Prime Minister has already outlined a specific number the country could accept. Therefore, he said that limit should not be exceeded.
Moreover, he stressed that government decisions must reflect public capacity and sentiment. Otherwise, he warned, it could lead to national pushback.
He also highlighted Antigua and Barbuda’s responsibility to protect its own citizens first. As a result, he said policy must remain balanced and realistic.
Although talks continue, Sanders made it clear the country will not commit beyond its means. For now, discussions with the United States remain ongoing.
Ultimately, he said Antigua and Barbuda will continue to act responsibly while maintaining national stability and social balance.
