Prime Minister Sets April 1 Dissolution, Elections Loom
Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced that Parliament will dissolve on April 1, 2026.
He made the announcement during a parliamentary sitting, setting the stage for a snap general election.
As a result, the election will take place well before the 2028 constitutional deadline.
Browne told Parliament that he will soon decide when to issue the Writ of Election.
He said the writ could be issued on April 1 or within the following week.
Therefore, voters may go to the polls on April 22 or shortly after.
Initially, Browne planned to dissolve Parliament earlier.
However, he delayed the move after consulting with colleagues.
They suggested giving the opposition United Progressive Party more time to prepare.
Specifically, they wanted the party to finalize its full slate of candidates.
Meanwhile, Browne confirmed that the Constitution requires at least 21 days between the writ and elections.
So, officials must follow this timeline before setting the final election date.
He also said he will send a formal letter to the Governor General next week.
That letter will confirm the writ date, nomination day, and election day.
In addition, the announcement follows weeks of political activity across the country.
The appointment of Randy Baltimore as Deputy Speaker also formed part of recent developments.
Now, with the dissolution date confirmed, the country enters a key campaign period.
As a result, political parties will intensify campaigning in the coming weeks.
Finally, the nation prepares for a fast-paced election season as the official process begins.
