Family Files Wrongful Death Claim Over Prisoner’s Custody Death
Family files a wrongful death claim against the government after Chinlee Robinson died in custody. The 23-year-old passed away on 24 January 2025, hours after being granted bail for allegedly stealing a mobile phone.
According to the claim, prison and police officials acted negligently. Moreover, the family’s attorney, Wendel Alexander, called for a full homicide investigation. However, police rejected that request. Assistant Commissioner Clifton Cabral said there was no evidence of foul play.
Evidence heard at a Coroner’s Inquest last week raised serious questions. For instance, a 15-year-old inmate testified he heard a short scream late on 23 January. Then, silence fell across the prison. The witness also described limited overnight supervision, with inmates locked in their cells from mid-afternoon.
Furthermore, medical evidence revealed that Robinson died from oxygen deprivation, neck trauma, and heart failure. His brother told the court Robinson was a fit footballer with no known health issues.
Robinson had spent roughly five weeks in detention. During this time, he was reportedly distressed after learning his release was delayed due to passport issues.
Colonel Trevor Pennyfeather, Superintendent of Prisons, suggested strangulation was the likely cause of death. Meanwhile, Alexander emphasized the need for accountability and justice for the family.
The wrongful death claim demands general and punitive damages. Additionally, it seeks legal costs and interest. The family hopes the claim will push authorities to investigate fully and prevent future incidents.
This case has sparked public concern over prison safety. Moreover, it raises questions about detainee supervision and how authorities handle young inmates.
As the legal process unfolds, the family continues to push for answers. They want transparency and justice for Robinson. Meanwhile, authorities maintain their position, arguing that the death shows no clear evidence of criminal intent.
The inquest continues to examine the circumstances surrounding Robinson’s final hours. Families, legal experts, and human rights groups are watching closely. Ultimately, the case could influence how detention facilities operate in the future.
