Caribbean Activists Strategise to Address Regional Risks

Caribbean

Caribbean activists have begun strategising to address risks facing the region.
The discussions followed a recent virtual regional conference.

A number of activists from St Vincent and the Grenadines took part.
In total, 187 participants joined the meeting.

The conference focused on the January 3, 2026 military strike.
The strike was carried out by the United States on Venezuela.

This meeting marked a first of its kind.
It was titled The Voices of the Caribbean in Defense of Venezuela and International Law.

Representatives came from political and civil organisations.
Jurists and solidarity movements also participated.

Countries represented included Antigua and Barbuda and Argentina.
Others included The Bahamas, Barbados, and Belize.

Participants also joined from Canada and Cuba.
Curacao, Dominica, and Grenada were represented.

Guyana, Haiti, and Jamaica also took part.
Martinique, Paraguay, and Palestine joined as well.

The Dominican Republic and St Kitts and Nevis participated.
St Vincent and the Grenadines and St Lucia were included.

Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela were also represented.
Participants from other global regions joined as well.

The conference aimed to pool ideas and energies.
The focus was defense of regional unity and peace.

Specifically, participants supported a proclamation.
It states the Caribbean stands against external threats.

The meeting agreed on proposals and strategies.
These were based on analysis of regional threats.

Particular focus was placed on the situation in Venezuela.
Participants discussed impacts on the Venezuelan people.

This included the January 3, 2026 strike.
That incident involved the kidnapping of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife.

Participants articulated shared proposals and actions.
These involved social and solidarity movements across the Caribbean.

They also unified positions against destabilising external threats.
The goal was regional stability.

Participants denounced actions by President Donald Trump.
They also denounced continued military presence in the southern Caribbean.

Additionally, they criticised pressure on nations over natural resources.
These actions, they said, threaten regional sovereignty.

The meetings aimed to promote regional cohesion.
They also aimed to defend peace through public positions.

Participants agreed to build an international solidarity network.
This network would defend national sovereignty.

They also planned an action plan.
It seeks to influence foreign policy reformulation.

The January 19, 2026 conference forms part of a series.
These activities include expert presentations and analysis sessions.

Through this work plan, participants expect collective outcomes.
They aim to generate legal instruments and discussion spaces.

Ultimately, the goal is Caribbean unity and integrity.
