Tour operator warns airfare hike, ferry outage hurting Barbuda travel

Tour operator David Joseph says travel to Barbuda is now in crisis.
He warns that rising airfare and a grounded ferry are damaging tourism and daily life.

Currently, travellers rely on one air carrier, SVG Air.
As a result, there is no competition on the route.

Since January 1, 2026, SVG Air raised ticket prices by 26 percent.
The 15-minute flight now costs more than $220, up from $174.

At the same time, the Barbuda Express ferry remains out of service.
Because of this, residents and visitors have no affordable alternative.

Speaking on OBSERVER AM, Joseph said the situation hurts the country’s image.
He explained that high prices discourage both tourists and locals.

Moreover, limited flight schedules worsen the problem.
Visitors often get only four hours on Barbuda before returning.

Accordingly, Joseph said this short window ruins the full Barbuda experience.
He added that poor service compounds the frustration.

“This is not just about money,” Joseph said.
“It is about service and our national reputation.”

Meanwhile, policy specialist Kendra Beazer says the crisis exposes inequality.
He is also a former member of the Barbuda Council.

Beazer argued that the new international airport benefits mainly the wealthy.
In contrast, locals face high prices and limited access.

He noted that private jets enjoy broad access to the airport.
However, ordinary residents must rely on costly, limited flights.

Consequently, Beazer said the airport is becoming an elite gateway.
He stressed that it should serve all citizens.

Furthermore, Beazer highlighted stagnant wages on the island.
The Barbuda Council remains the main employer.

However, council workers have not received raises for years.
As a result, wages do not match rising travel costs.

Beazer said fare increases must reflect local income realities.
Otherwise, workers will continue to struggle.

Therefore, he called for urgent dialogue among key stakeholders.
He wants talks between government, private sector, and the airline.

Specifically, Beazer proposed concession packages to ease costs.
These could shift some burden away from residents.

Until then, Barbuda remains stuck in costly limbo.
Ultimately, Beazer said authorities must ensure movement for everyone, not just the wealthy.
