Smith Urges Unity As U.S. Visa Pause Hits Antigua
Smith said the U.S. visa pause affecting Antigua and Barbuda should not become a political issue. Smith described the situation as deeply disappointing. He said the decision affects Antigua and several Caribbean neighbours. He noted that 75 countries worldwide now face an indefinite pause on immigrant visa processing.
According to Smith, the decision marks a sad day for the Caribbean. He said the region has long shared strong ties with the United States. These ties include mutual respect and cooperation. They also include shared values built over many years.
Smith explained that people-to-people connections remain strong. He pointed to family ties across borders. He also referenced educational exchanges. In addition, he highlighted economic partnerships that benefit both sides.
However, Smith said the inclusion of Caribbean nations is disheartening. He named Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, the Bahamas, Jamaica, St. Lucia, and St. Kitts. He said the blanket policy affects the entire region. As a result, many Caribbean families now face uncertainty.
At the same time, Smith expressed concern over local reactions. He said the issue was quickly politicised at home. Instead of unity, he said political attacks followed. He specifically referenced the United Progressive Party.
Smith said the opposition used the issue to attack the Prime Minister. He argued this approach offered no solutions. Instead, he said it created division. He stressed that the visa pause did not result from government action.
According to Smith, the decision came solely from the United States. He said it affects many countries globally. Therefore, he rejected claims linking the matter to Antigua and Barbuda’s policies.
Smith said the timing calls for national unity. He argued the country should respond with one voice. Instead, he said opposition figures rushed to assign blame. He added that such actions failed to help Antiguans and Barbudans.
Meanwhile, Smith called for calm and diplomacy. He said the country needs measured responses. He emphasized the importance of diplomatic engagement. Through dialogue, he said, officials can seek clarity on the decision.
Smith warned against divisive rhetoric. He said political point-scoring helps no one. Instead, he urged leaders to advocate for citizens through proper channels.
Finally, Smith called for regional solidarity. He urged Caribbean people to stand together. He also called on Antiguans and Barbudans to remain united. He said unity remains vital during this challenging period.
