SWETES: Main Road to Be Renamed Rufus Lewis Highway
SWETES: The main road through Swetes will soon be renamed the Rufus Lewis Highway. Prime Minister Gaston Browne made the announcement during the funeral of Rufus Adolph Lewis, a veteran trade unionist and nation builder.
The decision follows a request from Lewis’ son, Enoch Lewis, who asked for the renaming to honor his father’s lifelong dedication to the country and community. However, the Prime Minister clarified that he had already planned to make the announcement, regardless of the request.
Rufus Lewis was a longtime and proud member of the 39ers. Moreover, he played a key role in developing important infrastructure projects across Antigua. Among these were the Old Road Primary School and the All Saints Police Station. Both facilities continue to serve essential roles in education and public safety.
In addition, Lewis made a lasting impact through the labour movement. He served on the Antigua Trades and Labour Union (AT&LU) executive committee for 22 years. During his tenure, he was widely regarded as a steadfast advocate for workers’ rights. Furthermore, he supported organisational growth within the union.
Lewis retired from active service in 2021. Nevertheless, his influence on labour and community development continues to be felt across the island.
The renaming of Swetes’ main road is seen as a tribute to Lewis’ dedication. By naming the highway after him, the nation acknowledges both his public service and his role in advancing community projects.
Prime Minister Browne highlighted that this recognition reflects Lewis’ contributions to national development. The announcement at the funeral also underscored the personal respect and admiration held for Lewis by family, colleagues, and the wider community.
The Rufus Lewis Highway will stand as a permanent reminder of his commitment to education, public safety, and labour advocacy. In addition, it will honor his decades of service to Antigua and Barbuda, inspiring future generations to value civic engagement and community leadership.
Ultimately, the renaming demonstrates the country’s recognition of its nation builders. Through infrastructure development and labour advocacy, Rufus Lewis left a legacy that will endure for years to come.
