CXC Makes Special Arrangements for 3,400 Candidates With Disabilities
CXC has made special arrangements for thousands of candidates with disabilities. The Caribbean Examinations Council supported 3,444 candidates during the 2025 examination sittings.
Firstly, the arrangements covered candidates with visual impairments and other special needs. The figures were announced at a press conference. The event took place in Kingston on Wednesday.
CXC Registrar and Chief Executive Dr Wayne Wesley shared the details. He said the measures showed the council’s commitment to inclusive education. Moreover, he said CXC aims to ensure fair participation for all candidates.
According to Dr Wesley, the arrangements allowed candidates to sit examinations on equal footing. Therefore, accessibility remained a central focus during the 2025 sittings.
In addition, Dr Wesley said CXC is advocating for regional adoption of the Marrakesh Treaty. The treaty falls under the World Intellectual Property Organization. It focuses on improving access to learning materials.
Specifically, the treaty supports people who are visually impaired. It also assists those who are otherwise print-disabled. As a result, it plays a role in educational inclusion.
Furthermore, Dr Wesley spoke at a recent regional WIPO workshop. During that event, he outlined CXC’s position on the treaty. He said the council would support its implementation.
Additionally, CXC plans to work with ministries of education across the region. This collaboration would help advance the treaty’s goals. Consequently, access to learning resources could improve.
Dr Wesley also addressed future plans. He said CXC will continue reviewing its approaches. The council will also review how it uses technology. These steps aim to improve accessibility in future examinations.
Meanwhile, Dr Wesley linked accessibility to CXC’s wider responsibilities. He said widening access for candidates with disabilities remains essential. At the same time, the council continues improving services.
Moreover, he noted CXC’s role in supporting stakeholders. This includes support following disasters across the region. Therefore, accessibility forms part of a broader regional commitment.
Finally, Dr Wesley said inclusive education remains a priority. He emphasized that fairness and participation guide CXC’s work. The council, he said, remains focused on serving all candidates.
Ultimately, CXC reaffirmed its responsibility to the region. Supporting candidates with disabilities remains a key part of that mission.
