Repair work begins after St John’s boardwalk collapse

Repair

Repair work has started on a damaged section of the St John’s waterfront boardwalk. Officials expect restoration within two to three days.

Port Manager Darwin Telemaque confirmed the timeline on Monday. He said crews moved quickly to secure the area. As a result, cruise operations continued without interruption.

According to Telemaque, the collapse followed overcrowding in one section of the boardwalk. Too many people gathered in a single spot. Consequently, the structure faced excessive stress.

He explained that a tile reportedly broke under the pressure. This failure then triggered a partial collapse of the boardwalk. However, officials later confirmed there were no serious injuries.

The incident occurred on a peak cruise day. Thousands of visitors were in St John’s at the time. Therefore, the boardwalk linking Redcliffe Quay and Heritage Quay was heavily used.

Nearby pedestrians and businesses were briefly alarmed. Still, emergency teams responded quickly. As a result, the situation was brought under control.

To reduce congestion, authorities relocated water taxi operations. They moved services to the Montserrat Ferry Terminal. Telemaque said this step helped prevent large crowds from forming again.

Moreover, the relocation eased pressure on the affected area. It also allowed repair crews to work safely and efficiently.

Telemaque stressed that public safety remains the top priority. He assured residents and visitors that repairs will meet proper standards. The section will reopen only after full inspection.

In addition, officials plan to review crowd management measures. These steps are especially important on high-volume cruise days. Therefore, further controls may be introduced.

Authorities also plan to increase monitoring along the waterfront. This will help identify risks early. Consequently, similar incidents may be avoided in the future.

Meanwhile, the public and visitors are urged to follow posted advisories. Officials ask people to avoid restricted areas while work continues.

As repairs progress, normal activity is expected to resume gradually. Businesses along the waterfront remain open. Tourism officials say the area remains safe.

Overall, authorities say the incident highlights the need for crowd awareness. With proper management, the waterfront can remain both active and secure.
