Prime Minister Calls Vehicle Gate Claims Fabrication, Admits Flaws
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has rejected allegations of illegality linked to the so-called “vehicle gate” matter. During the Lower House Sitting on Budget Debate Day 4, he described the controversy as “all a fabrication.”
Browne addressed Parliament on Monday, December 15, insisting the government broke no laws. He also acknowledged that procedural rules were not fully followed.
The Prime Minister said the issue involved excess vehicles purchased by the government, with approximately 30 acquired beyond requirements. He emphasized that the state suffered no financial loss because all excess vehicles were returned to the dealers.
According to Browne, vehicle purchases are often offset against taxes owed to the government. Therefore, he noted, the final accounting would reflect no loss. “The government would not have lost a cent,” he told lawmakers.
Although the government did not act illegally, Browne admitted policy breaches occurred. He drew a distinction between illegality and procedural violations, stating that no law prohibited the purchase of vehicles. However, he explained, the proper Cabinet approval was missing, which is essential for transparency and accountability.
Browne stressed that once the issue was identified, the government acted responsibly. He warned dealers repeatedly not to sell vehicles without Cabinet approval. Returning the vehicles ensured the matter was fully resolved.
The Prime Minister also addressed accusations involving the Member of Parliament for Rural East, Maria Browne. He denied any involvement by her in ordering vehicles and said no evidence, direct or indirect, supports the claim.
To strengthen governance, Browne explained that both he and the Member for Rural East are barred from procurement activities due to their household connection. He described this restriction as a built-in control mechanism to ensure transparency and accountability.
Browne criticized Opposition members for their response to the controversy, singling out female MPs. He argued that their actions unfairly targeted the only female parliamentarian involved. He added that such divisive rhetoric does not promote national development and labeled it backward-looking behavior.
