Accused Afghan Gunman Faces U.S. Murder Charge as Trump Pushes Migration Freeze
Accused National Guard attacker Rahmanullah Lakanwal now faces a first-degree murder charge after a deadly shooting near the White House. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro confirmed the update on Friday as she outlined several additional charges that prosecutors plan to file soon.
Authorities say Lakanwal, 29, ambushed two West Virginia National Guard members on Wednesday. The attack killed 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom and left 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe in critical condition. Both soldiers were in Washington as part of President Donald Trump’s recent military deployment to support police operations in the capital.
Although investigators have not yet filed every charge, Pirro said prosecutors are moving quickly. She stressed that the government views the attack as a deliberate assault on U.S. service members.
Meanwhile, Trump escalated his immigration rhetoric. During a Thanksgiving Day call with service members, he described the shooting as a “terrorist attack.” He later posted online that he intends to “permanently pause migration from all Third World Countries.” He argued that the U.S. needs time to “recover” from what he called illegal admissions under President Joe Biden.
Lakanwal arrived in the United States in 2021 under Biden’s Afghan resettlement program for allies who assisted American forces. However, he later received asylum during Trump’s term. His immigration history has now become part of a fierce national debate, one Trump continues to amplify.
Furthermore, the attack has intensified scrutiny of Trump’s recent decision to deploy National Guard units to Washington. The move already faces multiple legal challenges. On Friday morning, fewer Guard members were seen on patrol following the holiday, though officials did not say whether the shooting influenced that shift.
The political stakes also continue to rise. Trump’s latest comments come as his administration ramps up arrests of immigrants, including some living in the country legally. He also continues to push for faster removals and tougher border enforcement.
As the investigation deepens, federal officials say more updates are expected soon. They emphasize that the priority remains securing charges, supporting the victims, and addressing the broader security concerns raised by the attack.
