Government Moves Up December Salaries Ahead of ABST Cut, Cabinet Confirms
Government officials will issue December salaries earlier than usual to help workers benefit from the upcoming Antigua and Barbuda Sales Tax reduction. The decision aligns public-sector pay with the three-day ABST cut scheduled for December 19, 20 and 21.
Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant explained that the early payout gives households greater flexibility. He said families can use their earnings during the reduced-tax weekend, which remains one of the busiest periods of the year.
Additionally, Merchant highlighted that the ABST cut forms part of a broader Christmas relief package. The initiative includes the temporary return of the Christmas Barrel Initiative, which runs until January 15. It also features duty-free importation of hams, turkeys and whole chickens through December 25.
Consequently, the plan aims to stretch household budgets during a period when many residents face higher costs. Merchant said the combination of measures supports parents, single-income homes and low- to middle-income families.
He added that the early salary release will boost retail activity. Many small businesses depend heavily on December sales, and the reduced tax period is expected to attract strong consumer turnout.
Moreover, Treasury officials intend to disburse salaries before December 19. The exact date was not provided; however, Merchant stressed that the funds will arrive ahead of the ABST weekend. This gives workers enough time to plan holiday purchases, pay bills or take advantage of seasonal discounts.
Cabinet members believe the strategy will ease financial pressure and create steady festive spending. They also expect improved revenue flow for local shops, supermarkets and service providers.
The relief push follows several government steps to manage rising prices. Recently, officials reduced duties on essential imports and zero-rated key food items under the Common External Tariff. These changes seek to lower grocery bills and strengthen food security for vulnerable households.
In the weeks ahead, the Cabinet will continue monitoring demand, prices and retail performance. Merchant said further updates will follow as the holiday season progresses.
Overall, the early salaries and tax break aim to bring meaningful support to residents. The government hopes the package will create a smoother, more affordable Christmas for families across Antigua and Barbuda.
