National Clean-up Campaign Clears 13 Tons of Waste

National Clean-up Antigua Transforms Communities

National Clean-up Antigua is making a tangible difference as the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) continues its “Love Where You Live” campaign across the island. The initiative, which began in October, focuses on improving community spaces, removing waste, and promoting environmental awareness among residents.

Impressive Results in Villa Area

Over three intensive weeks, the Villa community saw remarkable improvements. Crews collected thirteen tons of bulk waste from public spaces, sidewalks, and neglected areas. In addition, seventy-five vacant lots were cleared of overgrown vegetation, debris, and abandoned materials, restoring these areas to safe and hygienic conditions. Thirty-one abandoned vehicles were also removed, further enhancing safety and accessibility.

Infrastructure and Safety Improvements

During the clean-up, NSWMA identified thirteen blocked or damaged gutters requiring repair to prevent flooding. Recommendations included power washing drains and ongoing maintenance to improve water flow. Vegetation control and tree cutting improved visibility and reduced safety hazards along streets, while also enhancing the overall aesthetics of the neighborhood.

Community Engagement is Key

The success of National Clean-up Antigua relies heavily on community participation. Residents have been encouraged to put out waste for timely collection and to maintain the clean environment created by the campaign. The visible improvements have already sparked pride among local residents, highlighting how organized waste management combined with community cooperation can transform neighborhoods.

Expanding to Yorks Community

Following the successful Villa operation, the Authority is now focusing on the Yorks community. Cleanup activities there will continue until Friday, November 21, 2025. Residents are reminded to support the initiative by placing waste out on time and participating in keeping public spaces clean. NSWMA emphasizes that sustainable cleanliness depends on ongoing public involvement.

A Vision for a Cleaner Future

National Clean-up Antigua demonstrates the impact of structured waste management and environmental stewardship. By improving streets, vacant lots, and public infrastructure, the campaign is fostering healthier, safer, and more attractive communities. It also reinforces the government’s commitment to environmental awareness and civic responsibility.

The campaign aligns with Antigua and Barbuda’s broader goal of creating sustainable neighborhoods while promoting community pride. Through continued efforts and resident collaboration, NSWMA aims to make clean, safe, and visually appealing public spaces a standard across the island.
