Jamaica School Rebuilding: Government Approves $500M

Jamacia

Jamaica school rebuilding efforts have received a $500 million boost after Hurricane Melissa. The Jamaican Government has approved this funding to support the cleanup and reconstruction of schools severely damaged by the Category 5 hurricane that struck the island on October 28, 2025. Dr. Kasan Troupe, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, announced the grant during the launch of National Parent Month at Tivoli Gardens High School in Kingston. The funds will be disbursed directly to individual schools to remove debris, restore facilities, and establish temporary learning spaces so students can resume classes quickly, emphasizing the crucial role schools play in community recovery.

According to Dr. Troupe, a total of 653 schools across the island have already reopened, while others remain under assessment. Over 40 technical workers are conducting on-site evaluations to determine which schools should be prioritized for rebuilding. A technical team, set up under the Minister of Education, meets twice weekly to monitor progress and coordinate efforts. In addition, the Ministry is collaborating with professional organizations such as the Jamaica Institute of Engineers and the Jamaica Institute of Quantity Surveyors to conduct rapid assessments and provide expert recommendations, ensuring that Jamaica school rebuilding proceeds efficiently and cost-effectively.

Beyond physical reconstruction, the Ministry is focused on the emotional and psychological well-being of students, teachers, and families affected by the hurricane. Dr. Troupe highlighted ongoing initiatives with counselors, deans of discipline, and health and family life educators to provide mental health support. UNICEF is sponsoring training programs for guidance counselors and helping professionals to strengthen community response. With the death toll at 45 and thousands displaced, Jamaica school rebuilding is central to restoring normalcy and reinforcing national resilience in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa.
