Historic St. John’s Church in Antigua Set for Major Restoration
The Church of St. Joseph and St. Patrick in Antigua’s capital is getting ready for a big restoration. This church, built in 1909 and damaged by an earthquake in 1974, will be transformed into the St. John Paul II Sanctuary. The project will bring new life to this important piece of Antigua’s history.
Renovation work will start in early 2026. Workers will strengthen the building’s foundation, walls, and roof while keeping its original look. The church will not only serve as a place of worship but also as a center for interfaith dialogue, education, and community support. Nearby buildings will be turned into a cultural and charity center to host events and help those in need.
This restoration is special because it honors St. John Paul II’s message of peace and unity. It also aims to attract visitors and pilgrims, boosting local tourism. The project will use eco-friendly technology like solar panels and rainwater collection to protect the environment. Local people will play a big role in making sure the project fits the community’s spirit.
