ABWU Trains ABCAS Students on Workplace Rights
Final-year students at the Antigua & Barbuda College of Advanced Studies (ABCAS) received workplace rights training this week. The session formed part of preparations for upcoming internships.
In addition, the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU) led the educational session. It focused on helping students understand their rights before entering the workforce.
The session was led by ABWU President Kem Riley. He explained key parts of Section C of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Code.
Furthermore, the presentation covered employment documents and working hours. It also addressed overtime, premium pay, sick leave, and the right to unionise.
Importantly, the training targeted students preparing for internship placements. It encouraged open discussion about workplace expectations and employee protections.
Riley said the initiative is part of the union’s long-standing outreach programme. He noted that many young workers enter jobs without understanding their legal rights.
“We have been conducting this session for a few years,” Riley said. “We consider it a core part of the ABWU’s mandate.”
He also added that education helps strengthen workers’ rights. According to him, informed workers can better defend and expand their benefits.
Meanwhile, students actively participated in the session. Several described the presentation as practical and informative.
One Public Administration student said the session provided valuable knowledge in a short time. The student highlighted how useful the information was for future employment.
In addition, another student said the session improved their understanding of unions. They also said they now understand workplace advocacy more clearly.
“I now have a better understanding of what it means to be part of a union,” the student said. “I also know how to stand up for my rights.”
Furthermore, the ABWU encouraged students to apply what they learned during internships. The union also stressed the importance of awareness in the workplace.
The session ended with encouragement for students as they prepare for internships and graduation. The union extended best wishes for their future careers.
Overall, the initiative aimed to strengthen awareness of workplace rights early. It also supported smoother transitions from school to employment for ABCAS students.
