Dr. Linroy Christian Elected Vice-Chair of Global Plastics Treaty Talks
Dr. Linroy Christian has been elected Vice-Chair of the INC-5.3 plastics treaty talks.
The Antigua and Barbuda Mission to the UN warmly congratulated him on the achievement.
The Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) develops a global, legally binding treaty to end plastic pollution.
This includes pollution in the marine environment.
Consequently, the treaty aims to protect oceans, biodiversity, and vulnerable communities.
Plastic pollution disproportionately affects Small Island Developing States like Antigua and Barbuda.
It also threatens livelihoods and the resilience of coastal communities.
Therefore, decisive and collective action is urgently needed.
The mission praised Dr. Christian for his leadership and advocacy on this critical issue.
Additionally, they wished him, Chair Ambassador Julio Cordano, and the negotiating team success.
The team will guide the process toward a meaningful and ambitious outcome.
Also present at the meeting was First Secretary Asha Challenger.
She attended as part of Antigua and Barbuda’s delegation.
However, she stepped down from her bureau and rapporteur roles.
Therefore, she will no longer serve as the bureau representative.
Challenger’s presence marked a symbolic handover to Dr. Christian.
He previously served as Vice President of the INC in 2023.
Meanwhile, both officials continue demonstrating commitment to resolving the plastic crisis.
Antigua and Barbuda remains fully engaged in global efforts to protect the oceans.
Furthermore, the country aims to safeguard future generations from environmental harm.
The mission emphasized the importance of international cooperation in combating plastic pollution.
Dr. Christian’s election reflects Antigua and Barbuda’s dedication to leadership on environmental issues.
In turn, it strengthens the nation’s voice at multilateral negotiations.
The move also highlights the country’s proactive stance on marine conservation.
The INC talks provide a platform for Small Island Developing States to influence global policy.
Moreover, Antigua and Barbuda can advocate for measures addressing the specific challenges they face.
Through sustained engagement, the country seeks a treaty that balances environmental protection and economic considerations.
Overall, the mission confirmed continued support for Dr. Christian and the negotiating team.
They will work collaboratively to ensure the treaty achieves lasting impact.
In conclusion, Antigua and Barbuda stands ready to contribute meaningfully to the global effort against plastic pollution.
