Deadly flooding hits California as months of rain head statewide

Deadly

Deadly flooding hit Northern California over the weekend, driven by an atmospheric river storm.

At least one person died in Redding after flash floods swept through the city, officials said. Police and fire crews carried out multiple water rescues.

Shasta County was hit hardest. Heavy rain flooded roadways, including parts of Interstate 5. Nearly a month’s worth of rain fell in just two days, with fire stations recording over five inches.

Meanwhile, Humboldt County also faced chest-deep floodwaters. Deputies rescued residents from stalled vehicles, and several homes were evacuated by boat and jet ski.

In Placer County, rising water on the South Yuba River forced evacuations in Cisco Grove. At least nine people left one home, according to local authorities.

Sonoma County deputies rescued a motorist in Santa Rosa who drove into floodwater and climbed onto the roof of their vehicle.

The flooding has eased slightly, but washed-out roads, debris flows, and mudslides remain widespread concerns. Officials urge residents to remain vigilant as more storms approach.

Northern California will see heavy rain continuing through Tuesday. Then, another atmospheric river will hit the entire state Tuesday night into Wednesday, worsening flood risks.

Southern California faces a Level 3 flooding threat for over 17 million people, including Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and Santa Barbara metros. Meanwhile, Level 2 threats remain elsewhere in the state through Thursday and Friday.

Rainfall totals could reach 4 to 8 inches in coastal and valley areas and 8 to 12 inches in foothills and mountains. Cities like Los Angeles may see nearly half a year’s worth of rain in just one week.

The National Weather Service warned of urban flooding, mud and debris flows, and hazardous driving conditions. It urged residents to take protective actions immediately.

Recent wildfire burn areas are especially vulnerable to debris flows. Additionally, abundant moisture will bring heavy snow to the Sierra Nevada, complicating travel.

Some relief is expected by the weekend, but officials say the stormy pattern will dominate California until then. Residents are advised to monitor updates and stay prepared.
