Antigua and Barbuda Celebrate Four Players Selected to West Indies U-19 Team
Antigua and Barbuda’s Cabinet has welcomed the selection of four young cricketers to the West Indies Under-19 team. Officials said the move reflects the country’s strong youth cricket program.
The announcement was made during Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting. Acting Prime Minister Sir Steadroy Cutie Benjamin chaired the session. Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant shared details afterward.
Merchant confirmed that Jewel Andrew, Matthew Miller, Micah McKenzie, and Tannis Francis earned spots in the regional squad. The team is preparing for international competitions, including the ICC Under-19 World Cup and youth one-day internationals.
“The Cabinet and people of Antigua and Barbuda extend congratulations to Jewel, Matthew, Micah, and Tannis,” Merchant said. Officials also wished the young players success as they represent both the country and the region.
Merchant highlighted Jewel Andrew as a standout talent. The 17-year-old wicketkeeper and batter has already played at the senior West Indies level. He made his one-day international debut at just 17 and has also appeared in T20 internationals.
Moreover, the other three players earned their places through consistent performance. Matthew Miller and Tannis Francis have represented the Leeward Islands. Meanwhile, Micah McKenzie was called up mid-series for the West Indies Under-19 squad during its youth ODI series against England.
Merchant emphasized that Cabinet views these selections as proof of Antigua and Barbuda’s cricket depth. “The inclusion of these four young men highlights the strength of youth cricket development in Antigua and Barbuda,” he said.
Furthermore, the appointments reflect the potential of emerging players on regional and global stages. Officials believe these athletes can inspire other young cricketers in the country.
In conclusion, Cabinet congratulated the four players and encouraged them to continue excelling. They urged the public to support the squad during upcoming tournaments.
Antigua and Barbuda’s recognition of these young athletes demonstrates the nation’s ongoing commitment to fostering cricket talent. This step marks another milestone in developing a strong pipeline of regional cricket stars.
