Pringle Returns as Opposition Leader Monday

Pringle

Pringle will officially return as Leader of the Opposition on Monday, May 11, during a ceremony at Government House.

Governor General Sir Rodney Williams will appoint All Saints East and St. Luke representative-elect Jamale Pringle to the position at 1 p.m.

At the same time, four United Progressive Party selections will also receive Senate appointments. Constitutionally, the Opposition holds four seats in the Upper House.

Therefore, Pringle selected four individuals to serve as Opposition senators.

The appointments include Chester Hughes, an executive officer with the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union. In addition, Jonathan Wehner, the UPP’s public relations officer, will also join the Senate.

Meanwhile, Malaka Parker, the UPP caretaker for St. John’s Rural North, received a nomination as well. Ashworth Azille, caretaker for St. John’s Rural East, will also serve in the Upper House.

According to Pringle, the selections support the party’s rebuilding efforts. He said the team will also strengthen debate inside the Senate.

“I am confident that these colleagues will bring to the Senate the representation the Party needs at this time of rebuilding,” Pringle stated.

Furthermore, he said the appointments will help maintain accountability within national politics.

Pringle added that the senators were chosen carefully and strategically. He explained that the party considered both immediate and long-term goals before making the selections.

“These persons were carefully chosen,” he said while discussing the appointments.

In addition, Pringle said the move aims to increase capacity within the United Progressive Party. At the same time, he noted the selections help lay a foundation for a future UPP administration.

Consequently, the appointments represent both political planning and party development.

Pringle also encouraged party supporters and the wider public to support the new senators. According to him, the appointees now carry responsibilities to both the party and the country.

The ceremony at Government House will formally confirm the appointments on Monday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the return of Pringle as Opposition Leader marks another step in the UPP’s rebuilding process following recent political changes.

The Senate appointments also place several familiar political and labour figures into parliamentary roles.

Overall, Monday’s ceremony will officially restore Opposition representation in the Upper House while strengthening the UPP’s parliamentary team for the months ahead.
