Browne warns Cabinet against complacency

Browne

Browne delivered a sharp message to Antigua and Barbuda’s new Cabinet on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne told ministers their jobs are not political rewards. Instead, he said public office carries heavy responsibility.

The warning came during a ceremony at the American University of Antigua. Ministers received their official instruments of office after the ruling party’s sweeping election victory.

The government won 15 of 17 seats in the April 30 general election. Therefore, Browne said voters now expect strong leadership and real progress.

During his address, Browne quickly rejected any sense of comfort within the new administration. He reminded ministers that public trust must be earned daily.

Furthermore, he warned that history and voters will judge the government’s performance closely. According to Browne, ministers will either rise together or fail individually.

He also stressed that the election victory was more than a political success. Instead, he described it as a national call for major change.

At the same time, Browne outlined plans for roads, water systems, ports, and hospitals. However, he argued that infrastructure alone cannot build a strong nation.

He said real progress depends on people. Therefore, the government plans to invest in education, job skills, and entrepreneurship.

In addition, Browne called for higher national standards and greater pride among citizens. He urged people to protect and beautify the country.

Moreover, he linked national pride to environmental responsibility. Citizens, he said, must help keep communities clean and attractive.

Browne also promoted his vision of Antigua and Barbuda as a “lifestyle superpower.” He pointed to Barbuda as a growing luxury destination for wealthy visitors.

Still, he insisted prosperity must benefit all citizens, not only the rich. He said every Antiguan and Barbudan should share in the country’s success.

Meanwhile, Browne stressed the importance of safety and security. Without public safety, he warned, economic growth cannot continue.

Although the government will invest heavily in law enforcement, Browne said crime prevention requires public support. He called on citizens to remain alert and responsible.

Finally, the Prime Minister demanded discipline and hard work from every minister. He warned there is no space in government for laziness or poor performance.

According to Browne, ministers will be remembered not for their titles, but for their results.
