Antigua forms full Cabinet after sweeping election win
Antigua and Barbuda officially completed its new Cabinet on Tuesday after a commanding election victory.
The governing party won 15 of 17 parliamentary seats in the April 30 general election. As a result, leaders moved quickly to form the new administration.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne and Attorney General Steadroy Benjamin first received their ministerial instruments during a ceremony at American University of Antigua.
Soon after, the remaining ministers took their oaths before Governor General Rodney Williams. Therefore, the constitutional process officially ended.
Under the Constitution, the Prime Minister assigns portfolios to members of Parliament. Officials also confirmed the government used updated oaths approved earlier this year.
The new Cabinet now oversees major national sectors. These include health, tourism, housing, education, energy, and public services.
Meanwhile, Michael Joseph became Minister for Health, Wellness, Environment and Civil Service Affairs. He will supervise public health services and environmental management.
In addition, Dwayne George took charge of Sports and the Creative Industries. His ministry will oversee sports facilities, carnival, culture, and creative programs.
Several senior ministers also received key portfolios. For example, E. P. Chet Greene will lead Foreign Affairs, Trade and Immigration. Likewise, Charles Fernandez will manage Tourism, Civil Aviation, Transportation and Investment.
At the same time, Melford Nicholas will oversee ICT, utilities, and energy. His ministry also handles digital transformation projects.
Furthermore, Maria Browne now heads Housing and Works. Her office will direct roadworks, infrastructure projects, and housing development.
Education responsibilities went to Daryll Matthew. Additionally, Anthony Smith Jr. will lead Agriculture, Lands and the Blue Economy.
The government also appointed three Ministers of State. They include Randy Baltimore, Michael Freeland, and Kiz Johnson.
However, lawmakers still must appoint a Deputy Speaker. Reports suggest St. Mary’s North MP Philmore Benjamin could receive the role.
Senators will take their oaths on Friday at Government House. After that, Parliament’s full formation will conclude.
Finally, Governor General Williams urged ministers to serve with integrity, unity, and dedication to the public.
