Jamie Darroux of Herberts faces charges for smoking cannabis in public. Police arrested him Monday, March 23, at about 1:30 p.m.

Officers from the Narcotics Department were patrolling near Potters Primary School. They saw Darroux smoking cannabis in public. Immediately, they arrested him and took him into custody.

He now faces formal charges and will appear in court soon.

The Police Administration reminded residents of the laws. The Tobacco Control Act, 2018, and Misuse of Drugs (Amendment) Act, 2024, ban smoking in public places.

The laws cover enclosed areas, workplaces, and public transport. They also apply to offices, factories, restaurants, bars, clubs, and shopping centers.

Educational institutions, children’s areas, healthcare facilities, and government buildings also fall under the ban. Public gatherings, recreational areas, taxis, buses, and aircraft are included as well.

Anyone caught smoking cannabis publicly or allowing it on public premises can face legal action. The law sets fines of up to EC$2,000.

Authorities stressed that they will continue enforcing the law across Antigua and Barbuda. They also urged the public to follow rules to keep communities safe.

This case highlights police efforts to prevent public cannabis use. Officers continue patrolling school areas and busy public spots to stop violations.

Darroux’s arrest serves as a warning. The police warned that breaking the cannabis laws can carry serious consequences.

Officials reminded residents that cooperation with the law protects schools, workplaces, and public spaces.

Finally, the police said they will keep monitoring public areas. They encourage everyone to respect the law and avoid penalties.

Following these rules will help the community stay safe and reduce crime. Citizens play a key role in supporting law enforcement.
