Massiah Slams Government, Calls for Urgent Labour Code Reform

Massiah

Massiah has criticized the government during a Labour Day address. He said it is not supportive of working people.

David Massiah, General Secretary of the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union, made the comments. He spoke at a Labour Day rally on Monday. Importantly, he addressed union members and supporters.

Meanwhile, he delivered a strong message about workers’ rights. He said the government has ignored labour concerns for years. As a result, he accused it of neglecting the working class.

At the center of his criticism was the Labour Code. He said the code has remained in revision for 15 years. However, it has not been completed.

Therefore, he called the delay unacceptable. He said workers still lack modern legal protections. In his view, reform is long overdue.

In addition, he highlighted global workplace changes. He pointed to mental health and workplace stress. He also mentioned maternity and paternity leave.

As a result, he said new laws are necessary. He argued that labour laws must reflect modern conditions. Therefore, urgent updates are required.

Furthermore, he stressed the importance of mental wellness. He said stress in the workplace is a serious issue. Consequently, he called for stronger protections.

He also criticized public sector negotiations. He said governments interfere in bargaining processes. According to him, this weakens fair discussions.

In addition, he called for better pay structures. He said current salary systems are outdated. Therefore, many workers are underpaid.

He stressed that all public sector workers need revision. This includes police officers and nurses. However, he said the issue extends beyond these groups.

Meanwhile, he urged workers to unite. He called for stronger solidarity. He said Labour Day should encourage action.

Moreover, he described the union’s role clearly. He said the ABWU stands for workers’ interests. He also called it a “union of choice.”

Finally, he reaffirmed the union’s commitment. He said they will continue advocating for workers. Therefore, pressure on policymakers is likely to grow.
