Destin Warns 2026 Hurricane Season May Be Above Normal

Destin

Destin warned that the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season could be more active than usual. He spoke about early climate signals affecting storm development. Moreover, he highlighted both risks and uncertainty.

Dale Destin shared the outlook through 268Weather. He said warm Atlantic waters are increasing storm potential. However, El Niño conditions may reduce overall activity.

First, Destin explained that sea surface temperatures remain higher than average. As a result, storms can form and intensify more easily. In addition, this creates favorable ocean conditions for hurricanes.

At the same time, he noted a possible El Niño event. This climate pattern often increases wind shear. Therefore, it can weaken storm formation in the Atlantic.

Destin described a “tug-of-war” between these forces. Warm oceans support storms. Meanwhile, atmospheric conditions may suppress them. Consequently, forecasts remain uncertain.

He projected around 16 named storms for the season. He also estimated 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes. Overall, activity may be slightly above long-term averages.

Furthermore, he said there is a 59% chance of an above-normal season. Most activity will likely peak between August and October. During this period, most Atlantic storms usually form.

In addition, Destin warned that forecasts can change quickly. He pointed to the spring predictability barrier. This period makes climate models less reliable. Therefore, updates will be important in the coming months.

He also stressed that storm numbers do not tell the full story. Instead, he reminded the public that one storm can cause major damage. As he noted, even a single hurricane can define a season.

“It only takes one storm to make it a bad season locally,” he emphasized.

Moreover, he urged Caribbean residents to prepare early. He encouraged people to stay informed and not wait for warnings. Instead, he said readiness should start now.

Finally, Destin said updated forecasts will be released monthly. The next update is expected in mid-May. As a result, scientists will gain clearer signals on storm activity.

Overall, he called for awareness and preparation across the region.
