APUA

APUA shop steward Zabina Nicholas called for stronger mental health support for workers. She spoke at a Labour Day rally in Antigua and Barbuda. Moreover, she focused on workplace stress and employee protection.

Zabina Nicholas delivered her remarks at a joint event hosted by the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party and the Antigua and Barbuda Trades and Labour Union. The rally took place at the V.C. Bird bust.

First, Nicholas stressed that workers need stronger rights protections. She said mental health must become a priority. In addition, she linked stress to current workplace conditions.

She called for changes to employment contracts. According to her, contracts must reflect real workplace pressures. Therefore, she urged reforms that support worker well-being.

“Change the contract,” she said. “We care about mental health.”

Furthermore, she said many workers face high stress levels. As a result, she argued that current systems do not provide enough support. However, she said change is possible with proper action.

Next, Nicholas outlined a long-term plan. She proposed workplace mental health systems by 2027. These would include leadership support and structured policies.

In addition, she suggested training for managers. She also called for flexible work arrangements. Moreover, she highlighted privacy protections for employees.

She further recommended mental health leave policies. She also proposed structured return-to-work systems. Therefore, she said workers can recover with dignity.

Nicholas cited global research on workplace stress. She noted that long hours can lead to serious health issues. Consequently, she warned that inaction could worsen outcomes.

“We will not allow our people to suffer,” she said.

At the same time, she emphasized that mental health must be part of workplace safety. She said it should not be treated as secondary. Instead, it must become a core focus.

Finally, she linked mental well-being to national progress. She said healthier workers create stronger productivity. Therefore, she believes better support will benefit the entire country.

“A strong mind makes a strong worker,” she said. “Strong minds build a strong nation.”
