Greene Predicts By-Election in All Saints East & St. Luke
Greene predicted a possible by-election in All Saints East & St. Luke. He spoke at a Labour Day rally in Antigua and Barbuda. Moreover, he said pressure is growing inside the opposition.
E.P. Chet Greene, Chairman of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party, made the comments on Monday. The event was held jointly with the Antigua and Barbuda Trades and Labour Union.
First, Greene said the opposition is weakening. He claimed internal tension could force political change. In addition, he suggested a possible seat vacancy.
He said the constituency of All Saints East & St. Luke may return to the polls. Furthermore, he linked this to pressure within the United Progressive Party. However, no evidence was provided to support the claim.
“The unraveling of the UPP will continue,” Greene said. “Within months, the people may go back to the polls.”
Next, he suggested that opposition leader Jamale Pringle could face pressure to step aside. He said such a move could trigger a by-election. However, he framed the statement as political prediction.
Greene also pointed to ABLP candidate Lamin “Lammy” Newton. He said Newton could return stronger in a future vote. Moreover, he referenced Newton’s close loss in the last general election.
“I anticipate a second chance for Lammy Newton,” Greene said.
In addition, Greene criticized the opposition’s past performance. He said it has not functioned effectively. He pointed to disagreements over COVID-19 policies and cruise decisions.
However, he also stressed the importance of democracy. He said a strong opposition is necessary. Therefore, he rejected the idea of eliminating political competition.
“Democracy requires an effective opposition,” he said.
Meanwhile, Greene outlined plans for greater public engagement. He said all ABLP MPs must hold quarterly town hall meetings. As a result, he expects stronger community interaction.
“That is how we balance democracy,” he added.
Finally, the opposition has not yet responded. The situation remains politically sensitive. Therefore, further reactions are expected in the coming days.
