ABLP Taps Benjamin, Beazer for Key Seats

ABLP

ABLP is preparing new candidates for two key constituencies ahead of upcoming elections. The move signals a shift in strategy.

The Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party has selected Dr Philmore Benjamin for St Mary’s North. He will replace longtime representative Sir Molwyn Joseph.

Meanwhile, the party has chosen Kendra Beazer as its candidate for Barbuda. This decision strengthens its push on the sister island.

The official selection is expected at the party’s delegates convention on April 12. This event will help shape the party’s election lineup.

Although general elections are due by 2028, speculation is growing. Some observers believe Gaston Browne could call early elections. Therefore, preparations have gained urgency.

Dr Benjamin brings decades of medical experience to the race. He runs a clinic in St John’s and has served communities for over 30 years.

Notably, he joined the ABLP after leaving the United Progressive Party last year. His switch marked a major political shift.

Soon after, Cabinet appointed him as a healthcare consultant. He now works to improve primary care services across the country.

In contrast, Beazer’s background lies in environmental policy and advocacy. He has held leadership roles focused on sustainability.

Previously, he served on the Barbuda Council under the Barbuda People’s Movement. However, he later aligned with the ABLP.

Moreover, he gained international recognition for climate work. He also contributed to the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust as an environmental lead.

The Barbuda seat remains a major challenge. Trevor Walker and the BPM continue to dominate there.

In fact, the BPM swept recent Barbuda Council elections in March 2025. This shows their strong local support.

Additionally, the ABLP has not won the seat since 2017. That loss followed the impact of Hurricane Irma on the island.

As a result, Beazer faces a tough contest ahead. Still, the party hopes his experience will attract voters.

Overall, these selections reflect a generational and strategic shift. The ABLP aims to refresh its leadership and expand support.

In conclusion, the political landscape is beginning to shift. With new faces and possible early elections, momentum is building.
