Antigua Takes Third at OECS Robotics Challenge 2026
Antigua and Barbuda secured third place at a major regional robotics event. The result marks a proud moment for the nation.
The team competed in the inaugural OECS Super Regional Robotics Challenge 2026. The event took place at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort. It gathered top young innovators from across the Caribbean.
Micah Matthew and Michael Harvey represented Antigua and Barbuda. Their teacher, Tijah Myers, coached the team. Together, they formed the country’s first delegation to this competition.
Moreover, the event focused on innovation and sustainability. Its theme highlighted solutions for a greener Caribbean future. Therefore, teams tackled real environmental challenges.
The competition lasted five days and drew regional talent. Teams came from several Caribbean islands. These included St. Lucia, Jamaica, and St. Vincent.
In addition, organizers designed a hands-on robotics challenge. Teams programmed robots to collect seaweed and debris. They also sorted waste into recycling bins.
Furthermore, extra points rewarded advanced tasks. Robots had to climb ramps and place bottles correctly. This tested both skill and creativity.
Antigua and Barbuda started strong in the early rounds. They scored 36 points in their opening match. This helped them move forward in the competition.
Next, they advanced to the semi-finals. There, they faced a strong team from St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Although they lost, they remained determined.
As a result, they entered the third-place match. They competed against St. Lucia for a podium finish. Importantly, they won that match and secured third place.
Meanwhile, St. Vincent and the Grenadines claimed the top prize. St. Maarten finished second after the final round.
At the close, organizers praised all participants. Dr. Ricard O’Neill addressed the teams with encouragement. He stressed that this event marks a new beginning.
Looking ahead, plans for the 2027 competition are already underway. Therefore, regional interest in robotics continues to grow.
In conclusion, Antigua and Barbuda’s achievement shows strong potential. It also highlights the value of youth innovation. Moreover, it reflects a commitment to a cleaner, sustainable Caribbean future.
