SLBMC Marks World Down Syndrome Day With Socks Campaign

SLBMC marks World Down Syndrome Day on Saturday, March 21, with awareness events.

Today, Friday, March 20, staff participate in the global “Rock Your Socks” campaign. Moreover, the community is invited to join.

People wear colorful or mismatched socks because chromosomes resemble socks. This fun act celebrates individuality and inclusion.

Dr. Saleem Hughes, Chair of Pediatrics at SLBMC, said, “World Down Syndrome Day reminds us that everyone deserves to be seen, valued, and included.”

Furthermore, he added, “The ‘Rock Your Socks’ campaign sparks conversations and challenges perceptions. We encourage everyone to participate proudly.”

In addition to the campaign, SLBMC organizes community events this weekend.

The Annual Sports Day takes place today. SLBMC partners with the Adele School, the Victory Centre, and CHATS. Children of all abilities play, connect, and showcase their strengths.

Meanwhile, the Annual Fun Ride happens on Sunday, March 22. SLBMC works with the Antigua & Barbuda Cycling Federation and Good Humans Inc. This event promotes health, unity, and inclusion. The public can ride along to support the community.

Dr. Hughes emphasized the power of collaboration. “Partnerships build supportive environments. Sports Day and the Fun Ride show that inclusion matters,” he said.

Additionally, these events reassure families that they are not alone. They highlight community strength and celebrate diversity.

Finally, SLBMC encourages everyone to participate. Wearing socks, joining sports, or riding together strengthens awareness and inclusion.

Overall, the weekend blends fun, education, and advocacy. It raises awareness, celebrates diversity, and fosters a strong, supportive community for people with Down syndrome.
