The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda approves major economic, infrastructure, and social measures
The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda opened its session with prayers led by a Methodist pastor.
He focused on 1 Timothy 2:1–4, reminding leaders and citizens of the power and responsibility of prayer.
Furthermore, he encouraged prayers for wisdom, integrity, fairness, and compassion in all decisions.
Next, the Cabinet approved measures to ease the cost of living amid rising global fuel and food prices.
Firstly, the Antigua and Barbuda Sales Tax (ABST) will drop to 0% on food and school supplies.
This reduction will take effect on April 10–11, 2026, before schools reopen after Easter.
In addition, the national minimum wage will increase from $9.00 to $11.50 per hour on April 1, 2026.
The phased plan will eventually raise the minimum wage to $13.00 per hour.
Moreover, public servants will receive an interim 5% salary increase at the end of March 2026.
This adjustment provides immediate relief while broader compensation negotiations continue.
Cabinet also approved the rehabilitation of All Saints Road, starting this week under the Ministry of Works.
Heavy equipment, materials, and personnel are being mobilized to ensure timely and high-quality construction.
In addition, discussions with Canadian firm AmDex will support other national road rehabilitation projects.
Furthermore, the Cabinet reaffirmed policies to empower long-term Crown land occupants.
Residents with over ten years of occupation can purchase up to ¼ acre at EC$1.00 per square foot.
The Government aims to improve homeownership, security, and wealth creation for citizens.
Meanwhile, a national clean-up campaign will launch in two weeks to promote public health and environmental safety.
Cabinet also approved the Christopher Holder National Art Gallery in the historic former Catholic School building.
The project supports arts, youth engagement, cultural tourism, and creative sector growth.
Additionally, the Ministry of Health announced a recruitment drive for Emergency Medical Technicians to boost emergency response.
Cabinet welcomed Mr. Zachary Phillips as AOSIS Legal Coordinator for 2026 to advance climate diplomacy.
Finally, Randy Baltimore, new St. Philip’s North representative, was invited to Cabinet to discuss constituency development.
Cabinet congratulated the National Debating Team for winning the Leeward Islands Debating Championship.
