West Indies Sail Heritage Foundation Announces Global Recycling Essay Winners
West Indies Sail Heritage Foundation (WISH) announced the winners of its Global Recycling Day Essay Writing Competition on March 18, 2026.
The competition ran under the theme: “Don’t Think Waste. Think Opportunity!” Students explored global recycling solutions and suggested creative ways to reduce plastic waste in Antigua and Barbuda.
Winners in the ages 8–12 category include Kaelem Gardner from Christian Union Pre & Junior Academy, who received first prize. Logan Henry of Five Islands Primary School received special recognition.
For the ages 13–17 category, Zende Hazelwood of St. Anthony’s Secondary School won Most Structured Essay. Sanaa Simon of Christ the King High School earned Most Creative Essay. India Walker-Jacobs, also from Christ the King High School, received special recognition.
Prizes were generously sponsored by Scooteroo, South Coast Horizon, Tropical Adventures, Adventure Antigua, SWASH Waterpark, and The Gifted Ribbon. These included eco-tours, school packages, waterpark passes, and custom tumblers.
Moreover, the sponsors’ support helped promote environmental awareness and encouraged students to think critically about reducing waste. The initiative combined education with practical incentives for youth engagement.
The WISH Ocean Love NO Plastic NO Waste School Program guided the competition, reinforcing sustainability practices in schools across Antigua and Barbuda. Students were urged to see recycling as an opportunity, not a burden.
In addition to awarding winners, the foundation highlighted the importance of youth participation in environmental solutions. Competitions like these aim to inspire lifelong habits and community involvement.
Public response was positive, with parents, teachers, and sponsors praising students for their creativity and thoughtful submissions. Furthermore, the initiative strengthened connections between schools, local businesses, and environmental organizations.
