Media Relations Specialist Jamilla Kirwan Appointed as New Independent Senator
Media relations specialist Jamilla Kirwan will be sworn in today as Antigua and Barbuda’s newest independent senator.
The ceremony begins at Government House, where Governor General Sir Rodney Williams will administer the oath of office. Under the Constitution, the Governor General can appoint an independent senator at his discretion.
Kirwan’s appointment restores the Senate to its full complement of 17 members. She replaces Kiz Johnson, who resigned to pursue the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party’s nomination for St Phillip’s South constituency in early December.
Officials explained that Johnson’s departure created a vacancy. Therefore, the Governor General moved quickly to fill it before the upcoming parliamentary sessions.
Kirwan brings a strong background in communications and public engagement. She has spent years building expertise in media relations, which she is expected to apply in her new role.
Furthermore, government representatives said her appointment ensures continuity in the Senate while legislative business continues.
Observers note that Kirwan’s professional experience positions her to contribute effectively to debates, oversight, and public communication initiatives.
In addition, her appointment signals a commitment to including skilled professionals in government decision-making. Many hope she will strengthen collaboration between the Senate and the public.
Overall, Kirwan steps into her new role with a mix of political awareness and communications expertise. She faces the task of representing independent voices while supporting effective governance.
The Senate, now fully staffed, is ready to tackle its legislative agenda. Kirwan will join 16 other members to review bills, question government actions, and uphold constitutional responsibilities.
Finally, her swearing-in marks an important moment for the Parliament. It underscores the value of professional experience in public office and highlights the Governor General’s role in maintaining a balanced legislative body.
