Media relations specialist Jamilla Kirwan will be sworn in today as Antigua and Barbuda’s newest independent senator.

The ceremony begins at Government House, where Governor General Sir Rodney Williams will administer the oath of office. Under the Constitution, the Governor General can appoint an independent senator at his discretion.

Kirwan’s appointment restores the Senate to its full complement of 17 members. She replaces Kiz Johnson, who resigned to pursue the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party’s nomination for St Phillip’s South constituency in early December.
