TikTok has agreed to pay Alabama at least $100 million and introduce new restrictions for teenage users, avoiding a trial over allegations that the company misled parents about protections against harmful content.

The settlement includes a two-hour daily limit for teens, restricted access between midnight and 6am, and suspended notifications during school hours. TikTok will also strengthen age verification and ban beauty filters for teenage users.

Young users will also be offered a non-personalized content feed. The agreement includes a conditional provision that could expand the overnight restriction to 10pm to 7am if other platforms adopt the same measure.

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall described the agreement as a first-of-its-kind settlement between a state and TikTok in the broader legal battle over social media and teen well being. He said the measures would provide greater protection for children using the platform.

Under the deal, TikTok will pay Alabama $100 million initially. The company could pay up to $300 million if 40 other attorneys general enter similar agreements within the specified time frame.

The case was part of a wider wave of lawsuits against major social media companies over alleged harm to young users. More than a dozen other states, including California and New York, continue to have lawsuits against TikTok.

Alabama initially sued TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, in April 2025. The state later narrowed its case to allegations that TikTok misrepresented the effectiveness of safety features, including Restricted Mode and Kids Mode.

TikTok has maintained that teen safety is a key priority and said its platform includes safety tools designed to protect younger users. The company also argued that federal law provides protections for online platforms over user-generated content.

The settlement means the Alabama case will not proceed to trial, where company documents and executive testimony could have provided further public scrutiny of TikTok’s approach to teen safety.
