Dominica to See Near-Total Lunar Eclipse Friday

Dominica

Skywatchers and stargazers in Dominica could be treated to a spectacular celestial display during the night of Thursday, August 27 into Friday, August 28, as a major partial lunar eclipse becomes visible across the island.

Weather permitting, the event will see almost the entire face of the Moon enter Earth’s darkest shadow. Although it is technically classified as a partial lunar eclipse, approximately 93.9 per cent of the Moon will be obscured at maximum, making it appear remarkably close to a total lunar eclipse.

The celestial event will begin at 9:23 PM on Thursday, August 27, when the Moon enters the penumbra, the lighter outer portion of Earth’s shadow. The eclipse will become more noticeable at 10:33 PM, when the Moon begins moving into the darker central shadow, known as the umbra.

As the night progresses, observers should be able to watch Earth’s shadow gradually spread across the Moon’s surface. The most dramatic moment is expected at approximately 12:12 AM on Friday, August 28, when the eclipse reaches its maximum.

The partial phase of the eclipse will continue until around 1:51 AM, while the final and more subtle penumbral phase is expected to end at approximately 3:01 AM.

Adding to the spectacle, the portion of the Moon covered by Earth’s shadow could take on reddish, copper or deep crimson tones, creating an effect often associated with a Blood Moon. This happens as sunlight passing through Earth’s atmosphere is bent toward the Moon, allowing more red and orange wavelengths to reach its surface.

For those hoping to catch the event, around midnight is expected to offer the best viewing opportunity, provided skies remain clear.

No special equipment will be required to safely observe the eclipse. Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse can be viewed with the naked eye. Binoculars or a telescope may offer a closer look, but simply stepping outside and looking toward the Moon should be enough to enjoy the event.
