Parts of eastern Indiana are facing “catastrophic” flooding as more dangerous thunderstorms move across the storm-weary Midwest. Nearly 10 inches of rain has fallen in some areas since Tuesday, with more rain expected. Cambridge City officials described the situation as catastrophic as floodwaters continued to rise.

Tuesday’s storms also caused widespread damage across the Midwest. A rare and deadly derecho brought hurricane-force wind gusts across a 300-mile stretch, killing at least one person and leaving more than 1 million homes and businesses without power. Parts of seven counties in eastern Indiana remain under the highest level of flood warning, with evacuations underway in Muncie and other communities.

In Muncie, firefighters are going door-to-door to help residents leave flooded areas. Floodwater reached waist-deep levels in parts of New Castle, where officials are using high-clearance city buses to transport residents to shelters. In Delaware County, officials are evacuating a neighborhood with about 200 homes. Responders had evacuated around 12 people by boat as of Wednesday morning, while additional rescues continued.

The storms have also caused deaths and injuries in Indiana and Ohio. A 4-year-old boy died Tuesday after a tree fell on a home in Geneva Township, Indiana. In Portage, Indiana, one person died after an apparent house explosion and fire. Police suspect storm-damaged trees may have damaged natural gas lines. Meanwhile, 16 inmates went to the hospital after lightning struck Grafton Correctional Institution in Ohio. Seven remained hospitalized, including one in serious condition.

Flooding has also forced evacuations in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine declared emergencies in Perry and Muskingum counties and activated a National Guard high-water rescue unit. Around 200 people left their homes or could not reach them after floodwater rose 6 to 10 feet in parts of Perry County. In Pennsylvania, crews rescued 10 people from a flooded home near Confluence and another person from the roof of a vehicle.

More rain could worsen conditions through Friday. Some areas could receive rainfall rates of up to 3 inches per hour, with localized totals exceeding 5 inches. Saturated ground could cause even smaller amounts of rain to trigger new flooding. A Level 2 of 5 severe storm threat also covers parts of the Ohio Valley and Midwest, where strong winds could topple trees and cause additional power outages.
