War of Words Erupts Between PM Browne and UPP Candidate Over LIAT Dispute

War

War of words have flared between Prime Minister Gaston Browne and Adrian Williams, the UPP candidate for St. John’s City South. This comes after conflicting claims over meetings and negotiations.

Firstly, the dispute centers on alleged secret talks, job negotiations, and unresolved LIAT severance payments. Consequently, tensions have intensified ahead of the general election.

Over the weekend on the Browne & Browne show, Prime Minister Browne accused Williams of opportunism. He said Williams sought high-paying government positions before fully committing to the UPP. Moreover, Browne claimed Williams spent hours emphasizing his “Labour” roots and denying previous UPP support.

According to Browne, Williams allegedly wanted a job at Trade for $15,000 and another as a pilot with the Defence Force for $7,000. Browne added that Williams criticized UPP leadership, including Chairperson Gisele Isaac and Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle. He concluded that Williams “was just looking for money” and refused to engage him due to unrealistic demands.

Meanwhile, Williams pushed back strongly. He described the Prime Minister’s statements as a “desperate attempt” to damage his reputation. Furthermore, he clarified that meetings were not initiated by him nor meant for personal gain.

Williams admitted attending meetings with Browne and visiting Minister of Foreign Affairs Paul “Chet” Greene. However, he insisted the discussions were about LIAT severance, not personal wealth. He said he prioritized justice for former employees before any secondary discussions.

He also rejected the $20,000 salary claim, noting even ministers earn far less. Williams accused Browne of attempting to distract him from criticizing government actions on the radio.

Consequently, the LIAT severance issue has resurfaced in the election campaign. Williams urged voters to see through what he called lies. Meanwhile, Browne predicted the UPP candidate would face a decisive defeat.

Overall, the exchange highlights growing political tensions. As the election nears, both sides are using the LIAT issue to rally support and shape voter perception. The drama shows the stakes remain high in Antigua and Barbuda politics.
