Visa Uncertainty Looms for Antiguans Amid US Restrictions

Visa

Visa uncertainty looms for Antiguans and Barbudans as the US keeps tight rules. Relief may take a long time.

Jake Johnston, Director of International Research at the Centre for Economic and Policy Research in Washington, spoke on Observer AM. He said the current US administration shows no sign of easing restrictions.

Moreover, Johnston explained that the US uses visa access as a political tool. He warned this trend affects Caribbean nations directly.

For example, the US recently raised the Citizenship by Investment threshold to $200,000. Experts see this as a targeted move against the region’s programs.

Additionally, the US has shown it will pressure countries to meet its geopolitical goals. Johnston cited Chile, which faced threats over a fiber optic project with China. This showed Washington’s willingness to use ordinary people as leverage.

Johnston said Caribbean citizens could feel similar pressure if US policies continue. He stressed that visa changes are unpredictable and personalized under the current administration.

However, he offered cautious hope. Long-term, he believes the relationship between the US and the Caribbean is unsustainable under these tactics. Both sides have an interest in a stable, cooperative future.

Furthermore, Johnston highlighted that harsh policies can backfire. They destabilize local economies and push people toward migration—the opposite of US objectives.

He praised Antigua and Barbuda’s Ambassador to Washington, Sir Ronald Sanders. Johnston said Sanders skillfully navigates US politics and protects national interests.

Finally, Johnston advised Caribbean nations not to rely on voluntary relief from Washington. Instead, he encouraged a united regional front as the most effective safeguard.

Overall, Johnston’s message is clear: short-term US policies may frustrate visa hopes, but a coordinated Caribbean response offers strength and stability.
