Venezuelans in Antigua Condemn Article Portraying Maduro Positively
Venezuelans living in Antigua and Barbuda have condemned a recent article they say misrepresents President Nicolás Maduro. Moreover, they argue it ignores the hardships millions of their compatriots face.
In a public statement, the group said the article’s portrayal of Maduro as a “good man” is inaccurate. Furthermore, they criticized the piece for using anti‑imperialist rhetoric to present him as a victim. “If you are going to publish something, at the very least it should be the truth,” the statement said. Consequently, they stressed that the depiction “does not represent us as Venezuelans.”
The group pointed to mass protests that erupted just months ago in Venezuela. They said millions took to the streets calling for international help to end what they describe as dictatorship and repression. In addition, they noted that similar expressions of desperation were visible in Antigua, where Venezuelans gathered in churches to pray and beg for intervention.
The statement also challenged how such coverage could appear despite what they call extensive, well‑documented evidence of abuses under the Maduro government. For example, they cited widespread imprisonment of people for speaking out and operation of detention and torture centers such as El Helicoide. Moreover, they highlighted the collapse of basic services as part of the humanitarian crisis.
“Did you really not know that there are hundreds of people imprisoned simply for speaking out against Maduro?” the group asked. Additionally, they said millions face hunger and more than nine million Venezuelans have fled the country in recent years.
Writing from exile, the Venezuelans described the article as “deeply painful.” They accused it of “whitewashing” a regime they hold responsible for persecution, forced exile, and erosion of democratic institutions. Furthermore, they said the coverage hurt them personally and politically.
In closing, the group dismissed the article’s framing as harmful and inaccurate. “That is not journalism,” they said. “That is disinformation.”
