UWI Honors Late Don Wehby With Posthumous Doctorate
UWI posthumously conferred an honorary Doctor of Laws degree on the late Honourable Don Wehby last Saturday in Kingston.
The award was presented during the graduation ceremony for the Mona School of Business and Management and the Faculty of Sport.
The University of the West Indies said the honour recognized Wehby’s outstanding service to business, sports, and national life.
Meanwhile, his daughter, Stephanie Wehby, accepted the degree on his behalf.
During the ceremony, UWI Public Orator Dr. Peter Glegg delivered a heartfelt citation.
He described Wehby as a proud Jamaican who remained deeply committed to national development.
According to Dr. Glegg, Wehby believed education could transform lives and expand opportunity.
Therefore, he supported countless scholarships for high school and university students.
He also viewed UWI as a cornerstone of Caribbean learning and leadership.
As a result, his relationship with the institution remained strong throughout his life.
Beyond education, Wehby earned praise for his corporate leadership at GraceKennedy Limited.
Notably, he served as long-time Group Chief Executive Officer.
Under his leadership, the company’s Financial Services Division achieved remarkable growth.
In fact, profits rose from $280 million to $1.4 billion within five years.
At the same time, the citation highlighted his integrity and disciplined leadership style.
He consistently placed accountability and service at the center of his work.
However, the ceremony also reflected on the personal side of Wehby’s life.
Dr. Glegg shared stories of a devoted family man with simple joys.
He loved Silver Sands beach and cherished visits to Disney World.
These moments, the orator said, revealed a man grounded despite great success.
UWI said the honorary doctorate represents its highest level of recognition.
Accordingly, it honored a leader who matched achievement with humility.
The university added that Wehby “walked the walk” in public and private life.
His actions consistently reflected his values.
Moreover, UWI noted his influence extended beyond boardrooms and balance sheets.
He helped shape national confidence and regional excellence.
Don Wehby passed away in July 2025 at age 62.
Nevertheless, his legacy continues to inspire Jamaica and the wider Caribbean.
