UWI Five Islands Debate Team Secures Historic Second

UWI

UWI Five Islands Campus is celebrating a major milestone. Its Postgraduate Debate Team placed second at the 2026 Inter-Campus Competition.

The event took place February 20–21 at The UWI Mona Campus in Jamaica. Notably, this marked Five Islands’ first appearance.

Moreover, the result stunned many observers. The team competed under the Five Islands Association of Postgraduate Students, known as FICAPS.

The delegation included Jake Taylor, the team captain. Cedric Park and Michelle Paige also debated. In addition, Kimon Drigo served as Postgraduate Representative. Odaissia Nichols coached the team.

On Friday, Five Islands faced The UWI Global Campus. They debated a CARICOM sanctions motion. Specifically, the moot addressed penalties for states ignoring regional policies.

As Proposition, the team argued with clarity and confidence. Consequently, they won the preliminary round. They advanced to the finals.

Furthermore, Cedric Park earned Overall Best Debater on Day One. His sharp delivery impressed the judges.

On Saturday, the finals raised the stakes. Five Islands met UWI Mona, often called the competition’s powerhouse. The moot focused on foreign military intervention to remove a head of state.

Although Mona claimed the title, Five Islands held strong. Therefore, they secured second place overall. The finish marked a historic first for the campus.

During closing remarks, head judge Germaine Barrett praised the team. He highlighted their poise and preparation. He noted how the “debutantes” challenged a seasoned giant.

Likewise, Omolora Wilson, captain of Mona’s team, offered praise. She admitted it had been years since Mona faced such fierce competition. She said Five Islands brought real intensity to the stage.

In the final standings, Five Islands placed ahead of Global Campus and Cave Hill. Meanwhile, St. Augustine did not compete this year.

As a result, the achievement carries deep significance. The team has raised the campus profile across the region.

FICAPS also thanked The UWI Five Islands Debate Society and campus leaders. Their support, they said, fueled this success.

Looking ahead, the team plans to build on this momentum. They aim to return stronger next year. Above all, they remain proud to represent Antigua and Barbuda on the regional stage.
