United Taxi Company braces for possible fuel hike amid Middle East tensions
United Taxi Company (UTC) is preparing members for potential fuel price increases as the Middle East conflict escalates.
The conflict involves Iran, a major oil producer, and continues to affect global energy markets. Consequently, transport operators in Antigua and Barbuda are anxious about costs.
Recently, West Indies Oil Company confirmed its latest fuel shipment arrived at higher prices. Gasoline may rise by 15 percent, while diesel could jump 40 percent.
UTC President Ian Joseph said the company is acting proactively. He called a membership meeting to alert drivers about the looming increase.
“We know global events can affect fuel prices. WIOC already signals higher costs. So, we prepared our members for what’s coming,” Joseph said.
During the meeting, fuel costs became the top concern, driven by rising import prices. Joseph noted that any increase would eventually impact consumer fares and the company’s bottom line.
Furthermore, he said the sector hopes the government might offer a subsidy, as done in previous crises. However, he acknowledged that no assistance is guaranteed this time.
“So, we’re anxious but ready. If the increase happens, we plan to discuss support with the Ministry of Finance,” Joseph explained.
He also emphasized that the conversation must expand beyond UTC members to the wider transport community. The organisation will engage other operators soon, regardless of the final fuel price decision.
Officials continue to monitor the situation closely. Meanwhile, businesses and consumers alike are preparing for possible economic ripple effects.
The ongoing conflict’s impact on oil prices could affect transportation costs, grocery prices, and other living expenses in Antigua and Barbuda.
UTC remains focused on communication, planning, and advocacy to mitigate the potential strain on drivers and passengers.
Finally, Joseph urged calm while stressing the importance of readiness. “We are monitoring, planning, and staying connected with both members and authorities,” he said, highlighting the company’s proactive stance.
