Unauthorized Beach Vendors To Be Removed Across Island
Unauthorized beach vendors in Antigua will have their facilities removed from Morris Bay, Darkwood Beach, Fryes Beach, and Fort James. This action is part of a new government initiative approved by Cabinet to regulate vending operations at major tourism sites.
The Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) and other agencies have been instructed to disconnect utilities to unapproved vendors. Meanwhile, a purpose-built facility will be constructed at Little Ffryes Beach to provide legal and safe vending spaces.
Purpose-Built Facilities for Vendors
The new Little Ffryes facility will offer modern, sanitary, and environmentally friendly spaces. It will include proper waste disposal systems, restroom facilities, upgraded water and electricity connections, and designated parking. The facility will also harmonize with the natural beauty of the beachfront.
The Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Transportation and Investment will lead the project. They will work closely with the Development Control Authority (DCA) and the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority. Existing vendors will be consulted to ensure operations continue smoothly during construction.
Improving Safety and Tourism
Over the years, Little Ffryes Beach has become a major attraction for locals and tourists. However, unstructured vending has caused challenges with sanitation, safety, and order. The new initiative will address these issues while supporting local businesses.
Authorities say the project will improve public safety, preserve the environment, and enhance visitor experiences. By creating regulated vending spaces, the government aims to strengthen Antigua’s reputation as a world-class tourism destination.
Next Steps
Construction of the new Little Ffryes facility will begin once the design and consultation phases are complete. Vendors at other beaches are expected to relocate or close their unapproved operations. The government emphasizes that this initiative is part of a long-term plan to upgrade tourism infrastructure and maintain clean, safe, and attractive beaches.
