U.S. Increases Pressure on Venezuela, Raising Concerns in the Caribbean

The U.S. has stepped up pressure on Venezuela by declaring the airspace above and around the country “closed.” This announcement, made by former President Donald Trump on Truth Social, has sparked concern in nearby Trinidad and Tobago and across the Caribbean. Trinidad is particularly affected because it lies just seven miles from Venezuela and shares close economic and security ties.

This airspace closure could complicate efforts to control illegal crossings and trafficking between the two countries. It may also disrupt important air travel routes in the region, as international aviation bodies warn airlines to avoid conflict zones. The increased tensions come as Washington considers possible military actions against Venezuela’s government.

Economic and migration impacts loom as well. Trinidad and Venezuela share natural gas projects critical to the Caribbean’s energy supply. Migration flows from Venezuela, which have been significant in recent years, are likely to rise if instability increases. Caribbean governments are watching closely, urging peaceful solutions and cautioning against actions that could harm regional stability.
