Trump Family Files Trademarks for Airports Using President’s Name
Trump family company filed to trademark the president’s name for airports. They said they will not charge fees.
The Trump Organization submitted the applications to the federal trademark office. They want exclusive rights for airports. Additionally, the filings include related items like buses, umbrellas, travel bags, and flight suits.
The filings follow debate in Florida over renaming Palm Beach International Airport after Trump. Simultaneously, New York–New Jersey tunnel proposals suggest naming it and Dulles International Airport in Virginia after him.
The Trump Organization explained it filed to prevent misuse by “bad actors.” The company emphasized that Trump and his family will not receive royalties from the Palm Beach renaming.
However, the company did not clarify whether it would charge fees for other airports or related merchandise in the future.
Trademark lawyer Josh Gerben said the filings break new ground. He noted that no sitting president’s private company has sought airport naming rights before an official honor. Usually, officials wait years or until after death. For instance, Bill Clinton waited 11 years, Ronald Reagan nine, Gerald Ford 22, and JFK one month.
DTTM Operations submitted the airport trademark filings. The three proposed names include President Donald J. Trump International Airport, Donald J. Trump International Airport, and DJT.
The Trump Organization claims the name is the “most infringed trademark in the world,” though analysts cannot confirm that. Other brands like Gucci, Prada, and Rolex actively fight counterfeiting.
Over the past year, the family expanded branding worldwide. They added towers, golf resorts, and residential developments in Dubai, India, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam. They also launched Trump-branded guitars, bibles, and sneakers.
In response to criticism, Trump said his sons hold the business in trust. He added that he has no day-to-day involvement while the brand grows.
