Trinidad and Tobago has entered a state of emergency as crime concerns grow nationwide.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar announced the measure effective Tuesday, March 3. Moreover, she said the decision followed serious security warnings.

Authorities recently uncovered credible evidence linking criminal gangs and former detainees to violent crime. Therefore, the government acted quickly to protect public safety.

The Prime Minister said she requested the emergency declaration after meeting the National Security Council on Monday. Subsequently, President Christine Kangaloo approved the measure.

Persad-Bissessar explained that the decision reflects the government’s zero-tolerance stance on crime. In addition, she pointed to several security operations carried out over the past ten months.

According to the Prime Minister, the police and armed forces have already conducted major strategic operations. Meanwhile, the government also introduced new laws to strengthen public safety.

However, violent crime increased again after the previous state of emergency ended on January 31, 2026. Since then, authorities recorded several shootings across the country.

Many of these incidents involve organised criminal gangs. Consequently, reprisals between rival groups continue to threaten communities.

Officials warn that unchecked violence could place many citizens at risk. Therefore, the government believes strong action is necessary.

During the meeting, security leaders presented detailed intelligence reports. These briefings came from the Police Commissioner, the Chief of Defence Staff, and the Strategic Services Agency.

Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro shared updates on recent gang activity. At the same time, military leaders discussed national security risks.

Intelligence agencies also warned about possible attacks on security personnel. According to the reports, some criminals may target police officers and prison officers.

Additionally, threats could extend to members of the legal and security services. As a result, authorities increased vigilance across key institutions.

The government says the state of emergency will strengthen law enforcement powers. Consequently, security forces can respond faster to criminal threats.

However, officials stress that the measure focuses on protecting citizens. They also encourage the public to cooperate with security agencies.
