Tributes Pour In for Former MP Eustace “Teco” Lake
Tributes pour in for former MP Eustace ‘Teco’ Lake, who died on Friday, February 20. He passed away after a period of illness. He was widely loved and respected.
In a heartfelt statement, E.P. Chet Greene praised Lake’s life and service. Greene spoke on behalf of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party leadership and members. He described Lake as a devoted comrade and loyal servant.
“It is with profound sadness that we say farewell,” Greene said. He noted Lake made an immediate impact in the party. Moreover, he said Lake served with dedication and humility.
Greene also praised Lake’s political insight. He said Lake had a rare gift to read political developments. In addition, he highlighted Lake’s compassion and integrity. He stressed that even opponents respected him.
“None would challenge that he was loved by all,” Greene added. He said Lake’s passing reminds everyone of life’s value and service’s true meaning. He also extended condolences to Lake’s family and loved ones.
Meanwhile, reports say Lake was hospitalised in recent weeks.
Lake first won the St John’s Rural South seat in 2009. He ran on the party’s ticket and won on his first attempt. Then, he secured re-election in 2014. That victory marked the party’s return to government.
After the win, Prime Minister Gaston Browne appointed him Minister of Public Works and Housing. In that role, Lake contributed to national infrastructure. His tenure was described as impactful and productive.
However, Lake later faced serious health challenges. Doctors diagnosed him with renal disease. As a result, he stepped away from elective politics.
In January 2018, he underwent a successful kidney transplant. Later that year, Daryll Matthew replaced him as the party’s candidate. Matthew now serves as the current MP. He has since shared condolences and praised Lake’s service.
After his recovery, Lake joined the Senate. He served in the Upper House and continued contributing to national development. However, in 2022, he resigned. He had advised the party of his wish to leave frontline politics.
Today, many remember Lake’s steady leadership. Above all, they honour his lasting service to Antigua and Barbuda.
